Blog to Save Barnston

More Info

I thought I would use this space to outline a few of the links I have found interesting while researching for this blog.

  • BC Agricultural Land Commission(www.alc.gov.bc.ca)  – This website outlines the steps needed to apply for removal from the ALR and outlines the status of applications from around the province.  This is useful because it sets the standard for who decides on removal and gives full disclosure on the different applications.  Found on this website was maps of applications and the report issued that decided Barnston Island would remain in the ALR.
  • BC Food Self Reliance Report (http://www.ffcf.bc.ca/PDFs%20&%20Linked%20Documents/BCfoodselfreliance.pdf) – This link offers insight into the need for agriicultural land as a producer of food for people in BC.  It discusses the importance of the province being self sufficient with produce and gives some hard facts about what is required to accomplish that.
  • Urbanization Research Paper (http://www.moyak.com/papers/urbanization-agriculture.html) – A paper written by a random academic that compares urban sprawl in the Lower Mainland to that across Canada and the world.
  • James H. Kunstler’s TED Talk on Suburbia (http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/james_howard_kunstler_dissects_suburbia.html) – An interesting and entertaining video that looks at the problem of urban sprawl from the point of view of an urban planner.  He discusses urban sprawl as both a problem and symptom of poor society design.  Will certainly be able to help the transition fromt talking about the problem to suggesting solutions.
  • Farmland Shrinking in Parts of B.C. (http://en.epochtimes.com/news/7-3-29/53477.html) – A newspaper article that vaguely discusses all aspects of the farmland loss in a local setting.  It discusses the importance and quality of BC farmland as a produce producer.
  • Smart Growth and Affordable Housing (http://motherlode.sierraclub.org/challenge_sprawl.html) – A page produced by the California Sierra Club that outlines numerous potential solutions to the problem of urban sprawl.
